Who Was St. Francis Xavier?

Francis Xavier studied in Paris, where Ignatius of Loyola challenged his ambitions with Christ’s question about gaining the world and losing one’s soul. Francis joined the companions who became the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest.

Sent east as a missionary, Francis served in India, traveled through Southeast Asia, and entered Japan. He baptized, taught basic prayers and doctrine, cared for communities, trained local helpers, and wrote letters urging Europe to send more prepared missionaries.

His methods reflected the assumptions of his century and should be studied honestly, but his willingness to cross languages and cultures remains striking. He died while hoping to enter China, leaving behind communities that continued after him.

What St. Francis Xavier Teaches Us Today

1. Let Christ redirect ambition

Talents and education find their purpose when offered for the Gospel.

2. Mission requires learning

Love for people includes attention to language, culture, and patient formation.

3. Plant what others may harvest

Francis often left before seeing the long-term fruit of his work.

A Prayer Asking for St. Francis Xavier’s Intercession

God of every nation, you sent St. Francis Xavier across cultures to proclaim Christ. Through his intercession, bless missionaries, help the Church listen before speaking, and give me courage to use my education and abilities in service of the Gospel. St. Francis Xavier, pray for us. Amen.
