Who Was St. Lorenzo Ruiz?
Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Manila to a Chinese father and Filipino mother. He was formed by Dominican priests, served as an altar boy and sacristan, and worked as a calligrapher. He married and had children. His life shows that the call to holiness reaches family life and ordinary work, not only the monastery or sanctuary.
In 1636, after becoming entangled in a criminal accusation, Lorenzo left the Philippines with Dominican missionaries. The group traveled to Japan, where Christians faced severe persecution. Lorenzo was arrested with his companions and pressured to renounce the faith. He refused and died in Nagasaki in 1637.
Pope John Paul II beatified Lorenzo in Manila in 1981 and canonized him in 1987 with companions who also died in Japan. He is honored as the first Filipino saint. His courage belongs to a shared story of Filipino, Japanese, and European Christians, rather than to an isolated hero acting alone.
What St. Lorenzo Ruiz Teaches Us Today
1. Holiness includes family life
Lorenzo was a working layman, husband, and father. His witness makes clear that family responsibilities can be lived as a path of faith.
2. Courage can coexist with fear
A difficult choice does not become easy simply because someone is a saint. Lorenzo’s witness points to fidelity in real danger.
3. Faith crosses cultures
His story connects Manila and Nagasaki and includes companions from different countries and vocations.
