Who Was St. Mary Magdalene?

The Gospels identify Mary Magdalene as a disciple from whom Jesus cast out seven demons. She then traveled with Jesus and helped support his ministry. Scripture does not identify her as the unnamed sinful woman in Luke 7, so her story should not be reduced to a claim the Bible never makes.

Mary remained near Jesus during his Passion when many disciples had fled. The Gospels place her at the Crucifixion, burial, and empty tomb. In John 20, the risen Christ calls her by name and sends her to tell the disciples, making her the first announced witness of the Resurrection.

Her life shows discipleship moving from healing to faithful presence and then to mission. Mary does not keep the good news as a private consolation. She carries Christ’s message to others even before they fully understand or believe it.

What St. Mary Magdalene Teaches Us Today

1. Jesus calls people by name

Christian mission begins with being known and healed by Christ.

2. Stay faithful in sorrow

Mary remained near Jesus when hope appeared lost.

3. Share the Resurrection

The Gospel is news to announce, not merely comfort to keep.

A Prayer Asking for St. Mary Magdalene’s Intercession

Risen Lord Jesus, you called Mary Magdalene by name and sent her to announce your victory. Through her intercession, heal what binds me, keep me faithful in seasons of grief, and make me a courageous witness to your Resurrection. St. Mary Magdalene, pray for us. Amen.
